Conducting Research

New Researchers:  Please review the following UNLV and UNLV-SDM requirements prior to beginning research or grant application process. 

New Research Project: 

  1. Submit ideas/ abstracts/ proposals to the SDM Office of Research, Associate Dean of Research (Dr. Connie Mobley) for review.  Dr. Mobley is the SDM IRB representative and must pre-approve IRB forms before submitting to the UNLV Institutional Review Board (IRB) located at http://research.unlv.edu/OPRS/forms.htm.
  2. Complete the CITI certification through the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects (http://www.citiprogram.org).  Send the completed certification to the SDM Office of Research, Administrative Assistant at noriko.takeda@unlv.edu.
  3. Once The SDM Office of Research has approved the IRB application for Research, a copy of the IRB forms can be submitted to the IRB for approval. This process including final approval must be completed before beginning the research project.
  4. Once you receive notice from the IRB of final approval, forward notification to the SDM Office of Research.

New Grant Proposal Submittals:

  • Inform the Office of Research about potential submittals via email.
  • Inform the UNLV Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) of the grant(s) you are interested in and submit the OSP Routing Form located at http://research.unlv.edu/forms/all/rsw.pdf to OSP.
  • The SDM Associate Dean for Research (Dr. Mobley) will provide assistance in the strategic development of your project proposal if needed.
  • Submit the final grant proposal to UNLV OSP at least five working days before the due date, as they are responsible for review and submission to the appropriate agency.  All final UNLV proposals must be submitted through the OSP per federal guidelines.
  • Send a copy of the grant announcement and final proposal to connie.mobley@unlv.edu and noriko.takeda@unlv.edu for archiving in the SDM Office of Research.
  • Once you receive the acceptance or denial letter of the award (funding), please notify Dr. Mobley via email with an electronic copy of the communication.

CITI Online Tutorial for the Protection of Human Subjects

All UNLV researchers and faculty advisors are required to complete the CITI course in The Protection of Human Subjects before a research protocol can be accepted into the OPRS office for review by the IRB. The CITI certification must be renewed every 2 years from date of completion.
